Here's some GREAT news for you Euros !

Friday, July 09, 2010

new 'rarities record' and tour!
I know anyone can get pretty much anything for free on the internet...so a new collection of old songs from us isn't that exciting...but, uh, yeah, we have a record coming out that contains 'Clumsy' and 'You Are Freaking Me Out' era performances. Some are live, some are in-studio radio takes and a couple are unused studio cuts. We spent a little time making a neat package...the LP is double gatefold fer instance! Might look nice tucked away in your shelf!

You will be able to purchase sept 7th from No Idea mailorder...or from somewhere adventurous enough to still be selling recorded music discs.

In other news, we are headed to europe on October 19th for yet another vacation with our Australian brothers A Death in the Family. Its been several years, so we are super excited! We will be joined by drummer Charlie Walker, whom you might recognize from Split Lip or Chamberlain or New End Original. He is a super nice guy and a fantastic drum bonker...so we are stoked! If you would like to watch Johnny play drums, you can still do so with his other band, A Decent Animal. We still love each other, he is just more into that music nowadays. We wish him an his band the best of luck!
LA sparkles on the ground (last minute show in LA this friday!)

we made it LA safe and sound. suffering from some pretty serious jet lag. woke up @ 7am on the dot and couldn't get back to sleep. it's nice to be back in the sun. took a walk with joey in the early AM. had breakfast @ the bright spot. god damn that place gets better everytime i go there. had our first practice in almost 2 years this afternoon. sound pretty fuckin' good if you ask me. we've got the rehersal room until saturday. not much planned other than playing these songs over and over again.

if you're reading this from china or japan.....we'll see you soon.

last minute show!!!! this friday at silverlake lounge (corner of sunset blvd & silverlake blvd in silverlake) we are on stage at 8 pm....come root for us!

White 10" on New Red Archives (NRA 30).
This record has 5 tracks, side a is accoustic, side b has your typical fastpaced melodicore which Samiam are so famous for.

Record, sleeve and insert are in excellent condition. Samiam were always nice to watch live but I never got around to buying their records. I hardly listened to this one.

Check out my other auctions for more 80s and 90s PunkRock- and Hardcorevinyl. I'm downsizing my collection and will list more records and shirts during the next few days and weeks. I combine shipping on multiple wins.

Interviews: Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam, Solea)
Posted by aubin on Friday, November 10, 2006 at 7:00 PM (EST)

I recently had a chance to ask my friend Sergie Loobkoff a few questions about his bands, Samiam and Solea.

The band released Whatever’s Got You Down and told me about everything from the production influences (Jesu, TV on the Radio) to their setlists to their almost-breakup.

It's been six years since your last record as a band, and you've been busy with Solea in the intervening time. what makes you sit down and decide to work on a new Samiam record?

Somewhere in 2000, Samiam broke up, but it wasn't really this big deal. It's not like we took ourselves seriously to be official about it. I mean, this band had been around for 11 years or something - we toured everywhere and put out a bunch records- but, we never took ourselves that seriously. For the first 5 or 6 years, we never did strategic shows, usually didn't tour right when an album came out or really do anything right from a commercial stand point.

Then we got on a major label path for about 4 years and it changed: we did tour 'in support of a product' which lead to doing some questionably lame things like tour with yuck bands and play ridiculous radio shows. I think we really did a lot of damage to our 'image' in those years. I felt like people thought, "these morons think they are something that they aren't".

But, in our defense, we weren't chasing the brass ring as much as being lame-os and listening to the various managers we had, which I guess is actually lamer.

In the process, I think we put out our three best records (Clumsy, You are Freaking Me Out & Astray) but thanks to this shitty industry, the US releases of 'Clumsy' & 'You are Freaking Me Out' have been out of print for years.

By 2000, in America, Samiam really became a 'never-was' band. But because we were on Burning Heart, which is Epitaph, everywhere else, these records were still quite visible outside of the states. Even after we broke up, we played three European tours and a jaunt to Brazil where pretty much every show in 6 years has been really great.

I did this band called Solea with my friend Garrett. we put out some music and because of my association with Samiam and his with Texas Is The Reason, we got to tour Europe and Japan several times each - in a much smaller scale than Samiam - with no pressure. If under a hundred people showed up (which happened as often as you would expect) we had no expectatio/s and it was fun. which is not fun with Samiam. One of Samiam's last US shows was in Albuquerque with TSOL and about 80 people. I hate to be jaded, but it was depressing for me.

Solea sort of went on the fritz last year, as Garrett sort of lost interest as we started our second album, Samiam did a tour in Europe that was amazing and that really energized everyone. I mean after our last show - which had 1,000 excited Samiam 'fans' in Cologne - we asked ourselves, "this is fun Why wouldn't we make another record?"

Then the fact that we are now on a label in America that is so supportive, nonjudgmental and easy going (Hopeless) we felt that we could do this without having to do all the things that made the late 90's less than fun for Samiamers. Like no one is going to force us to eat at Denny's and stay at Motel 6s across the States for 6 months a year.

You've been together for more than sixteen years, and I'm wondering what keeps things interesting and fresh for you as a band.

You know we have had some discussions about the set lists for the upcoming tours and we argued a bunch. Jeremy, the bassist, and I want to play lots of older songs - play what we think most people that like the band want to hear. Meanwhile Sean (other guitarist) and Jason (singer) expressed their desire to play a set that was new song heavy and that they are bored with playing the same old songs. They said that they would get bored with the old songs really quickly. I am different, I guess, I actually am looking forward to playing the old songs. It's not like we have been playing them much in the last 6 years, maybe 4 weeks each year.

I understand it is harder for the singer who has to put himself into the songs and vocalize while I do what basically any trained monkey could do: strum a guitar,

but it brings up point, that, for me, everything is fresh, even 12 year old songs and when you see Samiam in 2006, you are seeing a guy that is really enjoying everything about playing. I think during the mid and late 90s, I must have been really sick of the same songs everynight.

Although, I think I have block and remember mostly only the good things - well, that isn't true, I remember the bad things like fights and breaking down on the side of a frozen road - but now with time nostagia makes the worse of experiences seem pretty sweet Even if at the time I wanted to kill myself,

Anyways, yeah, now, for me, it's all gravy, really fun and I'm looking forward to it all. When you are a working stiff and don't have any outlets like art, music or sports or whatever, that is when life doesn't feel to interesting. I feel pretty creative and so I'm lucky.

Samiam is a band that I always loved and I did always wonder why you didn't blow up, the singles on the major label album were really great and everyone I played them for really dug them. What kind of experience did you guys have on the label, and how did you keep it together after that?

I don't think it is a fair question to ask why Samiam didn't get huge. I don't want to be too self-efacing but Samiam isn't one of those great hit bands. you know, like Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, whatever, those are much more than just a good band with great timing and marketing that made them they are undeniable.

I think that in the last years very few bands are like that. I love Green Day, but they sell millions more than Husker Du or Dinosaur Jr did. Green Day is so great, but face it, they benefited from timing, heavy duty marketing and lots of factors that have nothing to do with their talent.

I love Green Day, but nowhere near as much as Husker Du. Then you have a giant list of bands that really suck that are huge. I mean, I could see Korn being a band playing an empty heavy metal club in Fresno. The fact that they play hockey stadiums aren't because the 'deserve' it. They earned it with hard work, marketing and a heavy dose of luck.

I am pretty much a realist about Samiam...I think we are a pretty descent band and worked hard, but we don't 'deserve' anything. We should be pretty happy that we have toured the world, made albums and stuff...

Much of what you guys were doing a decade ago could be considered a precursor to what is really popular these days. Do you think Samiam had a role is shaping the sound?

I guess. just like a lot of bands that people never heard of shaped Samiam. Along with all the other well-known bands, Marginal Man, Short Dogs Grow, Social Unrest, Code of Honor, Crimpshrine, and tons of other unknown bands influenced me when I was learning how to play and write songs.

It is a really cool part of life; that you learn from the past and culture builds on itself. I'm not particularly proud of the fact that we are considered somewhat influential as much as I think it is nature. I do think it is an interesting dynamic to consider.

Lyrically, you guys have been very much about exploring emotional issues, rather than the political ones some of your peers did. Was that a concious decision?

To be honest, what is written is pretty much all up to Jason. James, sean and I all have written a few lyrics over the years but the vast majority has always been Jason, I mean he has to sing them, he should write them. I wouldn't say that he is a political person maybe not outwardly.

I think it is cool to take a stance against an issue especially for bigger bands...like the Rock Against Bush was amazing, I really respect Fat Mike for that...but incorporating it in the music is something for certain types of bands. When bands market themselves with half-assed, non-confrontational political slogans and lyrics that are safe and vague, it's silly. There are a couple of bands that I could name in recent years that consist of what I think are really stupid, inarticulate people.

With your last album, "Astray" you guys seemed to be taking a more varied approach to your songs, with a bigger range of dynamics and cleaner sound overall. What do you think we can expect from the new record?

Is that true? You think Astray was more varied and cleaner than the two before that? that is interesting. Well, if people prefered that...well, they are going to be confused our new one (Whatever's Got You down).

The songs are very much in line to what you would expect from Samiam: you know melodic, punky rock songs. But the production is much rawer and purposefully noncommercial. Sean brought us his friend Chris Moore to produce (who he knows from his friends in TV on the Radio.) Both Sean and Chris are Brooklyn guys, so they have a sensibility that is very different to Samiam and this genre of music. That's something which I am really happy to infuse but weary of. Basically, the record is much wierder and wacky than our usual recording style. We used ratty old amps, funky guitars and pedals and did alot of unconventional stuff with the vocals, like using effects, re-amping them and distorting them at times.

I don't really know much about TV on the Radio but, although they are a totally different band, I think we approached some recording tasks in the way they do. This lead to a lot of fighting, particularly between Sean and I. I mean I wanted the record to sound vaguely like Astray or more like Clumsy but sean wanted something totally different. So what we ended up with is a mish-mash in terms of general sound, like a compromise.

One thing that Sean is really into is the Jesu album, which is the guy from Godflesh's new band. I like it a lot too, but it is really crazy, lo-fi recording with blown-out tones and our record is influenced by that I guess.

I suppose i should note too, that we find ourselves for the first time since 1993 managing ourselves. That is a very liberating thing. Also, we are older guys that obviously are past the point where one could realistically have a chance to do something in the music industry That is actually very liberating also. My point in saying either of these things isn't to be self-deprecating and portray ourselves as these loser sad-sacks, but we had an opportunity to make a record with our personal goals in mind. Before we were managed by big radio promoters, so everything we did was with the 'industry' in mind. The production had to be slick and regular so it could be on the radio. I said before how we then also did compromising things to have our songs stay on the radio.

With this record, we said, 'we don't have to do this' and I think we produced a record that is sort of like the second Weezer album, "Pinkerton'...which has total great song writing but had very raw, wierd production. I remember people at the time were really not into it then after awhile, most people realized, that is is, by far, the best Weezer album.

Now, I'm not comparing 'Whatever's Got You Down' or Samiam to Weezer...that is pretty stupid but the the dynamic of the recording is sort of similar I think.

Do you think you guys will do more records? Like just get together every 3-4 years and record/tour/etc.?

I hope so. I guess it just depends on whether anyone cares. I know outside the States, we will do really well/and here in the States there is a small, dedicated fan base But if we sell really few records, I'm sure Hopeless will be bummed on us. At least little less inclined to invest on a good recording and stuff. But this question is a little wierd, because I could ask you the same type of thing: "Hey over the next 3-4 years do you think you will be interviewing nerds in dipshit bands?" How do you know? you might get some yuppie job or meet a girl from Peru...I know I will be friends with these guys and if they are into it I probably will be down.

Outside of Samiam, what do you guys do?

I'm an art director and graphic designer. I design all sorts of dumb marketing materials for yuppies to flash around and sell shit. I also do a lot of record designs for labels like Fat, Hellcat, Hopeless and a few majors. In the last year or so, I designed album packages for Lagwagon, Good Riddance, We Are Scientists, Lawrence arms, and lots more over the years. Now the business is getting pretty shitty so I have to deal with the yuppies more and more which sucks.

Jason manages a few bars in Berkeley and Oakland, Jeremy works at a law firm dealing with their website and Sean does interior construction in fancy Manhattan homes. Johnny, the smart one, does as little actual working as a guy in his mid 30s can possibly get away with. He likes to throw around that sweet chestnut, "I work to live not live to work"...which is funny because there isn't a lot of actual work involved...

I just arrived home. Andrew? You missed out on a absolutely fabulous show. Okay, the sound was better in Münster or Trier (as my buddies told me) but the show was awesome. I will write more tomorrow. I was able to pick up a setlist. (Thanks, Jeremy!)

Guys, feel free to post your opinions about the show in this thread.

Update:

The show in Cologne: It was the very last show of Samiam's Green Hell Whatever's Got You Down Promotion Tour Something. And you could really feel that these guys (including The Draft) had a great time together. I am sure they will miss each other (and maybe Germany, too).

I made it to the Stollwerck on time this time. Thanks to Mr. TomTom! But hey, why can't those navigation systems find you a nice, close and spacious parking space??? Cologne Old Town sucks! At least concerning parking spaces. I drove around for about 45 mins to find a proper place. Thanks to Damian and Reiner for helping me on that.

I made it right on time for The Draft. These guys seemed to have a lot of fun again. My buddies told me that the sound wasn't that good. I cant really say. I just listened to the lyrics and I always use my ear plugs. So I was content.

Jason sang one song together with the Draft again. Don't know which one though.

The stage at Stollwerck was rather small compared to the one at Skater's Palace (Münster). Jason, Sean, Sergie and Jeremy did not have much space to jump around as usual - but they tried. :)

Here is the setlist:

1. Sunshine
2. Factory
3. Take care
4. Mud Hill
5. No Size that small
6. Storm Clouds
7. Stepson
8. Mexico
9. When We're Together
10. Get it right
11. Wisconsin
12. Capsized
13. She found you
14. Full on

Encore:
Bad Day
Super Brava
Dull

And I also have a picture of the setlist for you:

Jeremy, I have to mention that writing down a setlist on a bag for sanitary pads is really neat. :P

During the very last song (Dull) everyone (guys from the Draft and few people from backstage) entered the stage. Chris was singing along together with Jason. People went crowd-surfing, people hugging each other. One could really see that touring with each other for one month makes you friends. After the song Johnny decided to smash his drums. :o

Awesome show, nice people & a great combination of old and new songs!

We want you back soon!

Shout-outs:

Jeremy, Sergie: Thanks for always treating my so kind!
Jason, Sean, Johnny: I always enjoy saying hi!
Damian, Reiner, Mario: My crew.
Cynthia, Cynthia's sister: Back home in the Netherlands?
Benni: I want footage!!! ;)
Manuela: Hm.... I got your message but I did not see you. :(

What an unspectular cover I first thought. But then? Whoooahh I discovered the cover of "WGYD" moves. Whoooaaah, am I crazy? They chase me! Will they get me? Dare to look at the cover longer than you usually do and you will see: Those wheels begin to rotate. Whoooahhh, the hell of a cover, if at the second blush. Anyway, the artwork is still not as good at the one of the 10.000 Days album by tool, but this was never the guys´ demand, I guess ;-)

old review from April 7 1998 on tour with.... CREED ! ! ! (2 replies)

Quote

APRIL 7 1998

The speed at which pop culture recycles itself today is amazing. It seems that record labels have already begun delving back to the early '90s for inspiration. One listen to Creed's amazingly successful, and somewhat dated sounding debut, My Own Prison, points in that direction anyway. Steeped in similarities to Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots, it's hard to imagine that music so familiar and indistinguishable can become the chart-rocket it is today. That is, until you see Creed perform live.

In person, Creed are just as one-dimensional – layering massive, plodding guitar riffs on top of tight, brooding percussion. Unlike the slightly monotonous disc, however, the live band gives their darkly textured tunes quite a kick in the ass, granting them a fist-shaking vibe absent on the CD. The audience seemed to love every minute of it, understandably so, because the heavy dynamics suit the material well.

With a near-blinding explosion of strobing flash pots, the four-man band from Florida sounded like a rocket launch at Cape Canaveral as they hit the stage, erupting into "Torn" while the packed house went ballistic.

Unlike the two opening acts for the evening (and many professional bands today, for that matter), lead singer Scott Stapp has a voice as powerful as the music that backs him up. His Eddie Vedder-esque wail could clearly be heard above the thunderingly tight riffing machine known as guitarist Mark Tremonti. Unfortunately, many of the riffs were predictable, as were many moments during the stage show. For instance, Stapp lasted for only one song before removing his shirt, exposing his lean, cut frame, and uttering such rock'n'roll clichés as, "Are you ready to rock!?" and the sure-fire applause button, "I didn't know we had so many friends here in New York!"

Again, for whatever reason, chalk it up to sheer charisma, Creed's audience simply couldn't get enough, with the female populous screaming like banshees in hormonally crazed lust. Not for nothing, if you're going to be utterly unoriginal, in today's overly critical mass media, you had better have the chops to back it up – and Creed has them in spades. How else could they get a platinum disc for My Own Prison, the sure-fire hands-down winner for the Deja-vu Disc of the Year.

"In America," their political rant, and "Illusion" received audience participation to the hilt, as did their smash hit and title cut, "My Own Prison," which they used to close their hour-and-20-minute show. Covered in sweat, the band returned to do a simple encore, the introspective and sedate, "One," and didn't embarrass themselves as many bands do by returning after the highpoint, only to blather in overkill.

During their set, they debuted two new songs, "Say I," and "With Arms Wide Open." Both were received favorably, which just goes to show that despite a rather disappointing lack of originality, Creed seems to have hit some collective nerve – hard. One can only hope that with their next disc, they put as much energy into penning some more distinctive songs, as they put into performing live.

The opening band, power-punk-pop Samiam, matched Creed's energy level, launching immediately into, "Full On," from their latest disc, You Are Freaking Me Out. As the title of their CD implies, Samiam knows one speed, all-ahead full. Their set, composed of ten tracks without much in the way of a varying tempo or rhythm, sounded incredibly similar. Unfortunately, their sharp cover of The Beatles' "Cry Baby Cry," felt noticeably absent at the gig, and despite his wacky appearance, resembling a young Bob Hoskins in his pajamas, lead singer Jason Beebout really did nothing to work the crowd, concentrating solely on lyric delivery, standing perfectly quiet while guitarist James Brogan tinkered with his amp periodically. At the risk of advocating inane, cliché banter, it would have been nice to at least have said "Hello" to the anxiously stirring crowd.

L.A. band Cool For August did their best to get things going, with their generic brand of alterna-pop. Sounding like a hybrid of Live and Pearl Jam-lite, much of their material was well delivered, but not memorable, with the exception of one of their final songs, "Spinning." Accompanied by an electric violin, the song bore a faint resemblance to R.E.M.'s "This One Goes Out to the One I Love," both musically and emotionally.
Live Review: Samiam
Joseph's Well

Samiam + The Draft + Vanilla Pod

Friday, 20th October 2006

Words by Nick Rowan

Quote

It would be easy for Samiam to be resentful by now. They've seen their supporting acts (Green Day, Blink 182, No Doubt among others) hit the big time whilst they've been left listless, waiting in the shadows. Nor is it, like say Fugazi, a moral stance. A major label recording contract came and went during the post-'Dookie' infiltration of the California underground in the mid 90s with Atlantic releasing only the seminal 'Clumsy' album in 1994. Those with a dark sense of humour may get a kick out of the fact that both Green Day and Samiam got started in the defiantly DIY Gilman Street scene by ex-members of Isocracy.

Two sides of the same coin then? Perhaps not. Mainstay songwriter and guitarist Sergie Loobkoff (interviewed on poppunk.com) attributes the lack of commercial progress to an instantly recognisable trait: "Those bands [at the time of interview meaning Face to Face and Blink 182 but presumably this could be extrapolated - NR] embrace youth culture and play music that celebrates blissfulness and being happy and carefree. I think their audience is largely made up of really young kids that want to go have a fun time at their shows and stuff. Samiam is much more serious and sometimes depressing."

So if these truths are self-evident why the hell is Joseph's Well sold out in advance for a bunch of washed-up, miserable old cranks? Maybe it's because Samiam's back catalogue shreds any of the other pop-punkers mentioned. Europe never gave a shit when bands like Samiam and the equally illustrious Jawbreaker sold out to the man, what mattered was that their music remained undiluted.

After a six year hiatus, which at some point encompassed Sean Kennerly's move from bass to guitar to replace James Brogan, the early signs aren't promising. Oddball singer Jason Beebout looks to have been eating solidly for most of that time and his eccentric inter-song babblings seem to be irritating Loobkoff ("That's not funny man."). Kennerly seems to be stoned or drunk, staring off in to the distance with an expression akin to an acid casualty. They start with 'Sunshine' and it quickly becomes obvious that Beebout's once silken voice is blown.

However, whilst age and a heavy touring schedule have altered Beebout's voice, they have also given it a scratchy, pain-infused quality that lends itself to the dark undertones of their material. Hardcore punk is a community that acts as a refuge for lost kids, kids from broken and abusive homes like the one Beebout grew up in. Songs like 'Stepson' and 'Factory' now cut even deeper with his voice breaking up as you watch.

Tonight they peak with 'Dull' and 'Capsized'. My chest tightens as the words paint a world of opportunities, a life to be seized before it drifts away. On stage is a man who was not willing to give in, a man who would not take it any more.

It's obvious (by their continual shouting) that certain sections would prefer a Don't Look Back rendition of Clumsy but the set interweaves new and old tracks. For others who have grown up alongside their releases, the night is one of catharsis. With fists in the air, every line being sung in unison, the audience is left wondering if Samiam will survive long enough to make another UK tour. Is it no longer true that America cherishes nothing more than a triumph over adversity? Either way, a life outside the mainstream has its own reward and perhaps the best thing we can learn from Samiam is summed up in one throwaway line; "Don't be jaded".

Some hours earlier, for some inadequate reason, I arrive too late for the opening set from the usually excellent Milloy. Silently cursing myself, I'm lucky that the UK's own Vanilla Pod quickly blow away these misgivings, and pretty much everything else that's not nailed down. They were great, combining bundles of energy with a light-heartedness that makes me wonder why I spend so much time at po-faced indie wakes. The fact that they construct little in the way of a barrier between the audience and the band also makes a welcome change. For the uninitiated their style, like the other acts on the bill, falls under the catch-all tag of melodic hardcore.

Main supports on this tour are Gainesville's The Draft. Again they ripped it up, though I suppose that shouldn't be surprising for a band that includes three members of Hot Water Music. Their songs hit like immediate classics, planting their anthemic choruses deep in the recesses of the mind. Seems like the new project has finally given them some independence from the weight of their own history (read: how to better 'No Division'). Check out 'New Eyes Open' or 'Lo Zee Rose'. Do it now.
